We all have regrets in life. Many of us wish we can go back in time and fix those mistakes. The truth is that we can’t do that, and we don’t have to do that because God is so merciful that we don’t need to undo our mistakes. He died on the cross so we can live a life of redemption.
I look back on my life and reflect on all the mistakes I’ve made and get pretty sad, but then I think about the power of his forgiveness, and I rejoice. I by no means lived a sinless life, but I still can start all over again. I know as Christians we tend to be hard on ourselves because we want to live up to God’s standards. We often forget that our past sins are washed away like stains on clothes. Once we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior we are no longer enemies of God despite our flawed nature. We don’t want to just sin as much as we want but we don’t want to make our own rulebook of Christianity either.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
– Romans 3:23-24 [NIV]
“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”
– Romans 6:15-18 [NIV]
Take Away: We all should be striving to grow closer to Jesus every day but not get hung up on every trivial thing that has nothing to do with the Bible (legalism, something I will discuss later) or beat ourselves up over a sin we committed 2 months ago. Be a slave to righteousness and not to condemnation. Make living for God a joy and not a chore.
