Kill the Spider: Breaking Free from What Controls You

Kill the Spider: Breaking Free from What Controls You

We are all slaves to something. Every one of us is mastered by whatever we love most, serve most, or can’t seem to live without. For some, it’s alcohol, pornography, nicotine, marijuana, or food. For others, it’s money and wealth. It could be technology, sex, the need for attention from others, or the endless chase to impress people so that we appear successful. Maybe it’s entertainment, buying more stuff, anger, social media, our careers, or video games. The list could go on forever.

Something has its grip on you, whether you want to admit it or not. Something drives you, comforts you, and promises to fill the emptiness that keeps gnawing at your soul. You live for that thing, and deep down, you know it. You may even hate it, but you keep running back to it anyway. That’s what slavery looks like in modern form. Jesus said, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin” (John 8:34). We may not wear physical chains, but we all serve some master – good or evil.

The Only One Who Can Fill the Void

There is only one Person who can truly satisfy that hunger inside you. It’s not found in pleasure, wealth, or approval. It’s not found in another human relationship, a hobby, or a habit. The only One who can fill the deep emptiness within the human heart is the Lord Jesus Christ. Augustine said it best: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

Christ alone can set you free. He breaks chains that no self-help plan or twelve-step program could ever touch. He doesn’t just teach you how to manage your sin – He gives you a new heart. When you surrender your life to Him, He doesn’t patch up your old self. He crucifies it and raises you up as a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). That’s the only path to lasting freedom.

Stop Sweeping Away the Webs

Too often we think the solution is to “try harder next time.” We sweep away the cobwebs of our behavior, only to find the same patterns creeping back. Why? Because the spider is still alive. The webs represent the visible sins – what people see. The spider is the root cause; it’s the sin in your heart that keeps producing those webs over and over again.

If you truly want to be free, you have to kill the spider. Ask God to reveal what lies beneath your struggle. What are you trying to satisfy without Him? Is it comfort, control, attention, or pleasure? Don’t just trim the leaves of sin; dig up the root. Confess it, surrender it, and let God destroy it completely. Jesus didn’t die so that you could live with your sin. He died to free you from it.

Stay on the Path

When you walk in freedom, the world will still try to pull you off the path. It will dangle distractions in front of you – politics, arguments, trends, entertainment, and petty things that steal your focus. Satan doesn’t have to make you evil to make you useless. All he has to do is keep you distracted and spiritually dull.

Stay alert and stay humble. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who is “the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Every day is a battle to keep your mind fixed on the things that matter most. Keep advancing the Kingdom of God. Keep seeking Him with all your heart. Don’t let the noise of this world drown out the voice of your Shepherd. Freedom is not just the absence of chains – it’s the presence of Christ guiding every step.
