Favorite Pastors Series: John Piper

There are certain pastors whose preaching changes the way you think about God. Not because they are entertaining, or because they are flashy. But because they relentlessly lift your eyes upward and make you see the glory of God more clearly.

John Piper is one of those pastors, and he is the latest subject of my Favorite Pastors of All Time series.

For decades, Piper has been one of the most influential evangelical voices in the world. His preaching has helped shape the theology, worship, and spiritual priorities of countless Christians. If you have ever heard the phrase, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him,” then you have already encountered the heart of his ministry.

A Brief Biography of John Piper

John Piper was born on January 11, 1946, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His father, Bill Piper, was a traveling evangelist, and from an early age, Piper was exposed to a life devoted to gospel ministry. That influence would later play a major role in shaping his own calling.

Piper attended Wheaton College in Illinois, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in literature. During those years, he began to wrestle deeply with questions about the purpose of life and the nature of true joy. Those questions would later become central themes in his theology and preaching.

He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and later completed a Doctor of Theology degree in New Testament Studies at the University of Munich in Germany. His doctoral work focused on the teachings of Jesus and the relationship between love and righteousness in the New Testament.

Before entering pastoral ministry, Piper served as a professor of Biblical Studies at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota. But in 1980, he accepted the call to become pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, where he would remain for more than thirty years.

During his time at Bethlehem Baptist Church, his preaching ministry expanded far beyond the walls of the church. His sermons began circulating widely, first through cassette tapes, later through books, conferences, and eventually through the internet.

In 1994, Piper founded Desiring God Ministries, an organization dedicated to spreading a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ. Today, that ministry produces books, articles, podcasts, conferences, and thousands of free online resources that have reached believers all over the world.

Piper officially stepped down from his role as senior pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in 2013, transitioning into a teaching and writing role while continuing to lead Desiring God Ministries.

Even in retirement from weekly pastoral leadership, his voice continues to influence pastors, missionaries, and everyday believers across the globe.

The Heart of Piper’s Teaching

If you had to summarize Piper’s theology in one sentence, it would probably be this:

God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”

This idea, often referred to as “Christian Hedonism,” sits at the center of Piper’s teaching. The basic idea is simple but powerful: the pursuit of joy in God is not selfish. It is actually the very reason we were created. According to Piper, the deepest joy of the human soul is found in treasuring God above all things. And when believers delight in God this way, it brings Him the greatest glory.

This theme runs through nearly everything Piper has written or preached. Whether he is teaching on missions, suffering, marriage, prayer, or worship, he constantly brings the conversation back to the same question:

Do we truly treasure Christ?

Piper’s preaching style reflects this passion. His sermons are intense, deeply biblical, and often emotionally charged. He does not approach the pulpit as a lecturer delivering religious information. He approaches it like a man who has seen something glorious and cannot keep quiet about it.

Why John Piper?

John Piper is one of the pastors who helped many Christians rediscover the centrality of God’s glory in the Christian life, including mine.

I first heard of John Piper through what many people now call his famous “seashells” sermon, which was part of his “Boasting Only in the Cross” message at Passion OneDay 2000. In that message, Piper warned about the tragedy of living a comfortable life that ultimately amounts to nothing for the kingdom of God. He told the story of a couple who retired early, moved to Florida, and proudly spent their days collecting seashells on the beach. Piper contrasted that picture with the call of Christ to spend our lives for something far greater. One day, he said, we will stand before God, and the last thing we should want to say is, “Look, Lord, see my shells!” That sermon struck a nerve with many believers and later became the foundation for his well-known book Don’t Waste Your Life. The message was simple and piercing: our lives are meant to be spent for the glory of Christ, not wasted on trivial pursuits.

So much modern Christianity revolves around human needs, human comfort, or human success. Piper consistently pushes believers to reorient their thinking. The Christian life is not about us being at the center. It is about God being at the center.

His preaching calls believers to think deeply about Scripture, to take God seriously, and to pursue a life of radical devotion to Christ.

He also has a rare ability to connect theology with the heart. Piper does not treat doctrine as dry academic material. He treats it as something meant to ignite worship.

When Piper talks about God, he talks about Him as someone who is infinitely beautiful, infinitely valuable, and infinitely worthy of our affection. Listening to his sermons often leaves you with the sense that you have been reminded of something enormous that the modern world constantly tries to make you forget.

For those reasons and many others, John Piper has been one of the most impactful pastors of the past half-century.
