Some pastors have a way of making the Bible come alive when they preach. They open the text carefully, explain it clearly, and apply it faithfully. When they step into the pulpit, their focus is not on personality or performance. Their focus is on the Word of God.
H.B. Charles, Jr. is one of those pastors. He is the latest featured shepherd in my Favorite Pastors Series.
For many years now, Charles has been known as one of the most faithful expositors of Scripture in America. His preaching is clear, direct, and deeply rooted in the text of Scripture. In a time when many pulpits are drifting toward entertainment or motivational speaking, Charles remains firmly committed to biblical exposition.
A Brief Biography of H.B. Charles, Jr.
H.B. Charles, Jr. was born in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in a pastoral home, as his father, H.B. Charles, Sr., served as pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida.
At just seventeen years old, Charles experienced something remarkable. After the sudden passing of his father, the church called the young Charles to become their next pastor.
Seventeen years old. Can you imagine that?
Most young men that age are still bored to death, sitting in high school classes or working in fast food joints, not even knowing what they want to do with their lives. Charles suddenly found himself shepherding a congregation and stepping into a role that would shape the rest of his life.
By God’s grace, he served faithfully as pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church for more than seventeen years. During that time, his preaching ministry grew, and his reputation as a careful expositor of Scripture began to spread.
In 2008, Charles accepted the call to become the pastor-teacher of Shilley Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida.
Since then, his preaching ministry has continued to expand through conferences, books, and online sermons. Charles has also become a key voice encouraging pastors to return to faithful, text-driven preaching.
In addition to his pastoral work, he has helped train and encourage pastors through the Cut It Straight Expository Preaching Conference, a gathering focused on helping ministers handle the Word of God carefully and faithfully.
The Character of His Preaching
One of the most refreshing things about H.B. Charles, Jr. is his unwavering commitment to biblical exposition.
When Charles preaches, he does not jump around from topic to topic. He opens a passage of Scripture and works through it carefully. Verse by verse, phrase by phrase, he explains what the text says and why it matters.
His preaching combines clarity, warmth, and authority. He explains the Bible in a way that ordinary believers can understand, but he also brings a depth that encourages serious study of God’s Word.
Another strength of Charles’s ministry is his pastoral tone. Even when addressing difficult subjects, he speaks with humility and a shepherd’s heart. His goal is not simply to win arguments or impress listeners. His goal is to help people understand and obey the Word of God.
In many ways, his preaching reflects the pattern described in Scripture itself: preach the Word, explain it clearly, and call people to respond.
Why H.B. Charles, Jr.?
Charles represents something that is desperately needed in the modern church: faithful, steady, text-driven, exegetical preaching.
There is no gimmick in his ministry. No attempt to chase cultural trends. No desire to entertain crowds. Instead, Charles simply opens the Bible and preaches it, as a faithful expositor should.
That kind of ministry might not always attract the biggest headlines, but it is exactly what the church needs. Week after week, faithful pastors around the world stand behind pulpits and feed God’s people from the Scriptures. H.B. Charles, Jr. is a great example of that kind of shepherd.
He also serves as an encouragement to pastors. Through his conferences and teaching, he constantly reminds ministers that the most important thing they can do is handle the Word of God accurately and preach Christ faithfully.
In a generation that often values style over substance, Charles is a reminder that the power is in the Word of God itself.
