“But Jacob crossed his arms as he reached out to lay his hands on the boys’ heads. He put his right hand on the head of Ephraim, though he was the younger boy, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, though he was the firstborn.”
– Genesis 48:14 [NLT]
God chooses our station or role in life. If we resist the sovereign ruler of the universe, we will always be proven to be wrong.
The commentator Matthew Henry said that “grace does not follow the order of nature, nor does God use those we think most suitable to be used.”Ephraim was Joseph’s younger son, but Jacob gave him the blessing due to Manasseh, the older son (Genesis 48:17-19). This displeased Joseph, and he tried to intervene and reverse Jacob’s hands, but his father knew what he was doing. God’s callings and blessings are often not given along the lines of human reason.
God, who sees the end from the beginning, makes decisions based on the past, the present, and future knowledge. Humans determine whether conclusions are correct based on what we see now. Often churches or Christian organizations promote people ahead of us who are younger or have less experience than us. This can be difficult for us, and we can spend a lot of time brooding about our station in life compared to others.
God is the kind and just ruler of the universe who knows where we will be most successful and fulfilled. It may not always be in leadership. Of course, we should want to be all God wants us to be, but never more.
Like Joseph, who trusted his earthly Father, Jacob, we must trust our heavenly father knows what he does with our lives.
