They say in the dark times is where you learn the most. I have been in financial darkness for over six months now, and here are some lessons I’ve learned while I been in darkness.
1. Don’t Jump Ahead of God
We become so eager to do stuff without the guidance of The Holy Spirit. We let our feelings and other people’s opinion dictate our actions. Waiting on God’s guidance is critical for success. If we don’t wait on God’s voice, we will end up disappointed. I faced so much disappointment in my life that instead of listening to my emotions, I trust in the spirit. People use faith without works is dead as an excuse to jump ahead of God. What James was saying in that passage was about salvation, not doing things out of impulse.
2. Waiting On God Is Not Passive
When we wait on God, we are not sitting down idly and waiting for a blessing in the sky. It’s actively seeking God till He gives you an answer. Seeking God means prayer, reading His Word, and meditating on His Word throughout the day. Joshua 1:8 says meditate day and night. While we have our own goals, God wants us to delight ourselves in Him more than our strong desires. If it’s in God’s will, He will give our hearts desires; if not, then He will provide us with something better.
3. Things May Look Like God But End Up A Counterfeit
“There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
– Proverbs 14:12 NKJV
This verse is so true right here. Things may look right in our eyes but not be right in God’s eyes. Usually, when we get out-of-the-ordinary opportunities, we automatically assume it’s God, but not necessarily. I recently got a job offer that, on paper, seemed like it was from God, but it wasn’t. The pay rate looked great, the job was remote, and I could make money writing. The three things I had been praying about for months. After doing my first assignment, I got paid $5.28. I was like, “ok, that’s not much, but it’s a good place to start.” About 2 weeks later, I asked about the $2,000 a month I was supposed to get paid; the manager said, “sorry, we aren’t doing that right now.” I was disappointed because I needed the money. After going through that experience, I continue to apply for jobs, one of which was a legitimate online business that required me to write about SEO. It was the most boring assignment I have ever done, not to mention it was 1,000 words. Just yesterday, they rejected me. I wasn’t sad because I know it wasn’t what God had in mind.
4. Never Underestimate God’s Generosity
God can bless in ways that seem unrealistic to the natural mind. I just made a post about Jesus feeding the 5,000 with 2 fishes and 5 loaves of bread. God can still do the supernatural when we stop trying to reason with God and delight in Him instead. The situation may look bleak, but it’s during the darkness where we get a better understanding of God.
