What is a Doxology?
To many Christians, you may or may not have heard the term “doxology” before or know what it means. Well, if you’ve scoured through the New Testament, in particular, you’ve definitely come across several doxologies, whether or not you recognized them.
The term doxology comes from the Ancient Greek words meaning “glory” and “saying,” so in a sense, one is saying glorious things to God. In other words, a doxology is a short hymn of praises to God.
As I stated before, reading through the New Testament, you’ll notice a verse or small group of verses interspersed throughout a book of the Bible, often coming at the end of a passage. For instance, the Apostle Paul offtimes gave discourse and doctrine, or a rebuke to the people to whom he sent a letter, but then wedged a grand and glorious worship verse in there to punctuate things.
The early church employed the practice of offering a doxology at the end of a service as a benediction, to leave things on a “high note” and give blessing to the congregation, and even more importantly, to orient members to have a heart of praise and thanks towards God and Jesus Christ as they left the meeting. (The tradition of doxology offerings was also practiced in some ancient synagogues.)
Why Learn Doxologies?
Much like Psalms in the Old Testament, doxologies can be great for us personally to learn, meditate on, pray and say out loud in private worship (and even publicly at times!). It helps align and steer our hearts and minds towards giving God Almighty praise and glory throughout our day.
Doxologies In The OLD Testament
Before we get underway with listing each doxology in the Old Testament, we have to quickly address why I’m not listing anything resembling a doxology from the Psalms.
Simply put, the Psalms, almost by definition, are inundated with words of praise and blessings to the Lord God. The Psalms are songs, prayers, and thankful or lamenting cries to God. The majority of the Psalms have at least one line (if not several or dozens) proclaiming and extolling the majesty of God. In fact, if you regard every doxology as a praise song or hymn, then 80% of all songs recorded in the Bible are located in the Psalms. Therefore, I will not include these in the list below – yet I still urge you to meditate upon them!
Below are the doxologies in the Old Testament, excluding the Psalms:
“Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His mercy and His truth.”
– Genesis 24:27
Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying,
“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.
The Lord is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
The Lord is a man of war;
the Lord is his name.
Pharaoh’s chariots and his host he cast into the sea,
and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
The floods covered them;
they went down into the depths like a stone.
Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power,
your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy.
In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries;
you send out your fury; it consumes them like stubble.
At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up;

For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. And Miriam sang to them:
‘Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.'”
